English Victorian sensation novelist. Born Ellen Price she married in 1836 and always wrote under her husbands name. Her first novel, Danesbury House, was published in 1860. Her second novel, East Lynne, is her best known work. It received good reviews upon publication and she became a household name. Her output was prolific (around forty novels) and she remained popular, but none of her later work ever matched the success of East Lynne.
