Chilean poet. In 1945 she became the first Latin American to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. Some central themes in her poems are nature, betrayal, love, a mother's love, sorrow and recovery, travel, and Latin American identity.
She was named Lucila de María del Perpetuo Socorro Godoy Alcayaga, but she used the pseudonym Gabriela Mistral which she formed from the names of two of her favourite poets, Gabriele d'Annunzio and Frédéric Mistral.
