German author and painter who is best known for his international bestseller Das Boot which was filmed in 1981 by Wolfgang Petersen.
In 1941 he was a war correspondent in Nazi Germany and he went on patrol with the crew of U-96 to photograph and record the activity on the U-boat for the purposes of propaganda. After the war he wrote several books on artists, including Picasso, before using his experience on the U-Boat to write the 1975 novel Das Boot and the 1976 non-fiction work U-Boot-Krieg / U-Boat War. In 2001 Buchheim established the Buchheim Museum of Imagination which houses his collection of Expressionist paintings.
