Bengali poet, philosopher, dramatist and novelist. His best known in the West for a book of poetry, Gitanjali. He was awarded the 1913 Nobel Prize in Literature because of his profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful verse, by which, with consummate skill, he has made his poetic thought, expressed in his own English words, a part of the literature of the West.
His literary reputation is based on his poetry but he also wrote novels, short stories and songs. Two of his songs are now the national anthems of India and Bangladesh. He also wrote songs in support of the Indian independence movement, and he renounced his knighthood in protest at a massacre carried out by British soldiers in 1919.
