German poet and writer. In 1815 he began studying painting at the Prague academy, but an injury to his hand damaged his prospects of success as an artist, and he turned to literature. He wrote some original poetry and specialised in the re-telling of legends and popular subjects.
He is credited with popularising the Blue Grotto of Capri as a tourist destination in the 1830s after he visited the cave in 1826 and subsequently publised Entdeckung der blauen Grotte auf der Insel Capri / Discovery of the Blue Grotto on the Isle of Capri (1938).
