Russian novelist and playwright whose best known work is The Master and Margarita. Bulgakov began writing The Master and Margarita in 1928, it is a magic realism satirical novel which was published by his widow in 1966, twenty-six years after his death. The novel is a critique of Soviet society and its literary establishment. The work is appreciated for its philosophical undertones and for its high artistic level thanks to its picturesque descriptions, lyrical fragments and style. 
A piece of the original gravestone of Nikolai Gogol was used on the grave of Bulgakov.
