Welsh poet and writer. His work is intensely personal and lyrical and he is considered to be one of the greatest poets of the twentieth century to write in English. 
He was married in 1937 to Caitlin Macnamara with whom he had three children, including the poet Aeronwy Thomas.  He died aged 39 in New York City while on a promotional tour. He collapsed at the White Horse Tavern after drinking heavily and died later in hospital. The main cause of his death was given as pneumonia.
