German dramatist. He was initially one of the most important dramatists of East Germany but his relationship with the East German government declined when his drama Die Umsiedlerin / The Resettled Woman was censored in 1961.
His work was continually under scrutiny in the East from then on and he started to work with West German theatres and many of his most famous works were premiered in West Germany. Success in West Germany resulted in world-wide fame and that made his work more acceptable in the East. At the time of his death he was considered to be the most important German dramatist since Bertolt Brecht.
