Irish writer. Considered to be one of the most influential authors of the twentieth century, Joyce was one of the first authors to challenge the traditional concept of what a novel could be.
Born James Augustine Aloysius Joyce in Dublin he was educated at University College, where he studied modern languages. In 1904 he met Nora Barnacle, a chambermaid, who he married in 1931. Joyce suffered throughout his life with chronic eye problems caused by glaucoma. Joyce died from a perforated duodenal ulcer. His last words were ‘Does nobody understand?
He is best remembered for his short story collection Dubliners, and his novels A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (a largely autobiographical coming of age novel), Ulysses (the characters and incidents of Homer’s Odyssey set in Dublin on a single day, June 16, 1904) and Finnegans Wake (which abandons all conventions of plot and character construction and is written in an obscure language).
