American actor and playwright, best known for his monologues. Gray was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship and the National Book Award for his monologue Swimming to Cambodia(1985). 
In 1992, Gray published his first and only novel, Impossible Vacation. The novel is strongly based upon Gray's own life experiences, including his Christian Scientist upbringing and his mother's suicide.
On January 10th 2004, Gray, suffering from increasingly deep episodes of clinical depression, was declared missing. On 7th March 2004 the Office of Chief Medical Examiner of the City of New York reported that his body had been pulled from the East River. It is believed that Gray jumped off the side of the Staten Island Ferry; suicide was the suspected cause of death.
