German novelist. He was the elder brother of novelist Thomas Mann. His novel Professor Unrat was adapted into the film The Blue Angel, starring Marlene Dietrich.
His most famous novel is Der Untertan. It has been translated into English under the titles Man of Straw, The Patrioteer, and The Loyal Subject. The title poses a problem for the non-German reader since there is no effective translation of the word 'Untertan' in the sense it was employed by Mann. The 'Subject' of the title conveys a sense of unthinking servility to the state.
His work increasingly satirised German society and resulted in him going into exile in 1933 to escape Nazi Germany. While in exile in America his career suffered and he died in California where he was buried at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Santa Monica. His ashes were later returned to Germany.
